Book Review: Marmol Radziner + Associates & Over&Over

About a month ago I received a copy of two really interesting books from Princeton Architectural Press (Thanks a lot!): Marmol Radziner + Associates. Between Architecture and Construction. This book includes many of Marmol Radziner + Associates well-known projects like the Kaufmann House restoration; a real gem!. I really enjoy all the details of the projects, explaining every step and making it really easy to understand. I also love the handwritten notes, sketches, etc., it makes the Read more [...]

Vila 1 by Powerhouse Company

Powerhouse Company designed this amazing villa set in the woodlands of Holland. The house is oriented optimal towards the views on the terrain and the sun. Half of the program is pushed below ground to meet local zoning regulations. This creates a clear dichotomy in the spatial experience of the house: a glass box ground floor where all mass is concentrated in furniture elements and a basement where the space are carved out of the mass. School Extension by AAVP Architecture

To create the school extension in a historical context, AAVP Architecture looked to the typology of the farmhouse. The new building speaks the same language as the older ones but has a higher level of abstraction. It looks as if it has been modelled on a child’s drawing: a simple volume with a pointed roof, big, deep-set windows and brightly coloured playrooms. The addition of curtains behind the large windows strengthens the suggestion of the fantasy world of a child’s drawing. Via Read more [...]

Gross House by EM2N

The owner of the house needed more space to accommodate his family and didn’t want to ask permission to all the neighbors, so EM2N decided to create an underground expansion that led to the creation of two large sunken courtyards. Moss House by Nendo

Nendo renovated an olf wooden house on the Shibuya River in Tokyo into a live-work space. The house had accumulated some strange and wonderful features, like an inner courtyard, an oddly long hallway and a tiny room, from a series of earlier renovations. The hallway became a study, and the small Japanese-style room a studio. Veins of moss pattern were used on the interior walls to connect existing spaces with newly-renovated ones. The same pattern appears on the cable outlet, and on the Read more [...]
