CaixaForum Madrid by Herzog & de Meuron

Last month they finally inaugurated CaixaForum Madrid. The building, an old Central Electric located in the heart of Madrid near the green wall of Patrick Blanc, has been designed by Herzog & de Meuron. The intervention will increase the new social and cultural center from 2.000 to 8.000 square meters spread over seven levels.

At first I didn’t know what to think about the building, … I’m actually beginning to like it. It is more a sculpture than a building. But I’m not sure what the neighbors that look at the building 24/7 will think about it.

If you take a look inside, it is like jumping to the future. There is no relationship between inside and outside. Inside it is too futuristic and artificial.

  1. In the last few years – I guess that for longer time outside Portugal – banks, insurance companies, real estate companies and other financially well sustained groups have shown a good compromise between functionality and aesthetics.
Conceiving buldings that will offer a balanced interaction between the man and the nature, toghether with a pleasant architecture is important for a sustained development.
