Tanjong Beach Club

Takenouchi Webb designed the Tanjong Beach Club located on Sentosa island. Intended as an all day destination venue, the club brings together the elements of a hotel and private club with an all-day dining restaurant, outdoor bars and a large infinity edge pool.

The overall concept for the building is a modern, tropical, open development that sits directly on the beach and dissolves the boundary between indoor and outside areas. The tropical modern design mixes elements of classic yacht clubs, mid-century modernism and parts of Singapore’s colonial history. By using simple natural materials such as timber, stone, rough white plaster render and the lush tropical landscaping of the site, simple modern lines are combined with the warmth of natural materials.

Located directly on the beach, the entrance is bounded by a perforated concrete block wall giving a glimpse through to the outdoor bar. At night, light permeates the wall from inside and creates a glowing backdrop to the outdoor bar.

Adjacent to the entrance is the outdoor bar, an open, 11-meter long covered bar with a high 4- meter ceiling. The back wall of the bar is the perforated concrete block wall through which the outside planting can be seen. Five large custom-made pendant lights light the top of the bar. At the end of the bar, a separate DJ area, also clad in the same tiles, extends out towards the beach and pool.

The main restaurant space is a single 6-meter high space with 3-meter high pivoting glass doors that open up onto the pool deck and out towards the beach and sea. At the back of the restaurant is a diagonal patterned natural timber and brass feature wall that extends up to the mezzanine level. Behind the wall are the kitchen and back-of-house areas, office, store, toilets and kitchen.

The mezzanine level to the restaurant is accessed from a stair at the back of the timber feature wall and has additional seating and panoramic views out over the pool and beach. There is access to outdoor spaces either end of the Mezzanine dining which are used for evening private events and offer uninterrupted views over the beach.

The large 5-meter wide, 20-meter long infinity edge pool is the centrepiece of Tanjong Beach Club and is surrounded by the restaurant, pool bar and beach lounging areas. Integrated ledge seating along the whole length of the pool also allows for guests to lounge in the water. The beach in front of the pool has a mixture of day-beds, loungers and deck chairs that stretch out to the sea.
