The Official School of Languages, projected by architect Javier Garcia-Solera Vera, is located in a plot of Elche, Spain, that faces only one good direction, north, onto a recently planted palm grove. In the other directions are only noise, cars, the tumult of school doorways, etc.
All the rooms look to the palm grove in search of light, views and tranquillity. In the other directions, where direct opening is not possible, they manage the light through the arrangement of shared courtyards.
The difference between the public space, below, and the private space, above, is conveyed by its very different material definition. Light materials such as aluminium panels and slats on the exterior and wood panelling in the interior give the ground floor rooms a delicate yet resistant appearance. Above, a more intimate character is the aim and everything is wrapped in white painted joinery and plastering resting directly on the continuous wood floor, as though for domestic use.
